About the Artist
Wildlife and the natural world have always held a deep fascination for me. Having worked as a graphic designer for various companies until 1988, I spent the following years until 2007 working within a non-artistic background but now work solely on the wildlife subjects that I love so much. My work has sold through a number of local galleries, via private commissions, from my website, the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art and at the Mall Galleries in London. I was delighted that my painting 'Bewick's Swans' won the 'Bird Art and Photography' magazine award in 2010 at the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art. My work has been shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation's Wildlife Artist of the Year 2010, 2011 and 2012 award.
I gain inspiration for my work from many sources and particularly enjoy observing wildlife around the coast and countryside of South Devon. I spend much time sketching and being in close contact with nature, absorbing the experience and the interaction of its many creatures. This experience, my observations in the environment and the interaction of its creatures fires my imagination and I try to capture the sensation of my encounter with them.
For different subjects I like to explore various media, favouring watercolour or graphite and work in great detail, which forms the contemplative heart of my creative process. I like to use a coloured background for my paintings that allows me to create a mood for the composition that reflects the original encounter with my subject, observing the smallest detail that is particular to each of them.
